Let’s face it, to be born and live in Italy is to be fortunate. I have traveled all over the world and have been fascinated by all cultures that are different from my own. I have enthusiastically discovered and devoured every type of cuisine, custom, and tradition. But, when shopping, I have always chosen my own country. The style and image of Made in Italy are inimitable.
Just as in life, taking care of one’s image means finding the right balance between harmony and contrast. In the end, it is a game in which each of us can enjoy defining their own unique style. This is about finding a way of being that represents us. The most important thing is to feel comfortable. Always.
When we are about to buy a new jacket or a new pair of shoes, we often find ourselves asking, “Is this fashionable at the moment?” When I have acted on impulse and bought something because it was trendy at the time, I have always regretted it afterwards. This was not because items pass in and out of fashion quickly, but simply because the correct question should be, “Does this belong to me?”
To help you better understand what I mean: a tailored shirt is harmony. There is no comparison between wearing a tailor-made shirt and wearing a one off the shelf, even if it is from a very famous brand. The shirts sewn by my tailor are designed for me, to feel like a second skin. And even though my body is, unfortunately, no longer perfect, when I wear these shirts, I feel perfect. This is the effect that a tailored garment can have.
Why do we need contrast? Because too much harmony is boring. A note of color brightens up our lives, and there is nothing more satisfying than breaking some rules every now and again. I happen to experiment with unlikely color combinations. I leave my house and wonder, “Who else would combine a shimmering purple scarf with such an elegant dress?” I then answer myself with a simple “I do,” and smile while thinking about it.
What is the true Made in Italy style, then? At the base of everything, there is an undisputed quality of materials that when brought together with artisan skill makes each product a small masterpiece. Then there is the imagination that of the designers as well as our own, that allows us to be elegant even when wearing a pair of jeans – as long as they are Italian.
